americansIt just amazes me sometimes, how ethnocentric and prideful Americans are. Whether they be Asian, South Asian, Caucasian, or African Americans.
I get asked a lot lately, what are my plans after next year, when I graduate. And part and parcel of that comes the question of where I will be going. Will I stay in the US? Will I go home? Do I want to come back to the US?
Just the other day, before lab
Friend: So, do you plan to stay here when you're done? Me: Oh, no. I'm going to go home. (*smiling and cheery grin*) Friend: Like back to your country? Me: Yeah! Friend: YOu mean you don't want to stay? (*that tone*) Me: Oh, why would I? Here? Friend: Yeah, everybody wants to stay here. They don't wanna go back. (*"This is AMERICA" why don't you wanna stay??-tone like voice*) Me: Errr...(*rolled eye tone*), I love my country? Me:And I wanna go back cos right now I don't think any other place is better than my own country? It's peaceful and beautiful there. WHy wouldn't I wanna go bacK? Friend: Oh..Well, I just thought that, you know..America is where everyone wants to be. You know XX? She wants to stay, even though her family is not here. Me: (*THANK YOU!!!*) So...Americans think every freaking international student that comes to study wants to be a citizen or resident of their freaking country? Who do they think they are? Please lar, open up your mind sikit la. If your country is so good, then why isn't the whole world on their knees begging to be let into your country?
Why so ethnocentric lar...Can't accept the fact that at least 1 in a few people don't plan to continue living on your land? Not that your country is so bad la..but please, do respect other people who have a sense of belonging to their own country. People who may have a better sense of culture and identity more than you do.
Your land is beautiful, but you have no right to make people of other lands love your land.
Fine. This post is sure going to get me fired at in due time.
