woe is me.. ..and only the pompous twit would use "woe is I.."
Two of the biggest setbacks that a runner faces are injury and illness..
Injury is no stranger to the runner, for every form of running-related injury, whether it be plantar fascitis, achilles tendinitis, shinsplints, etc. has a remedy. And because most runners are well equipped with the knowledge (yes, runners are smart too, ya know?) of how to tend to these injuries, most will up and about on their trusty running feet within 2-4 weeks. Yours truly has had her own share of shinsplint attacks, plantar fascitis agony, and calf muscle pulls yet she emerges stronger and better for the next upcoming race.
However, when it comes to illness...
NO! Call the doc! I can't take it anymore! I need to find out how! WHY, WHY, Why MEee..!!!!??
Yep. Whether it be a fever, a cold, or worse, a STOMACH VIRUS!! The runner breaks down and starts contemplating her sad fate for the next few days when she can't run or do anything but lie in bed (or in my case, sit on the rocking chair) waiting for the hours and days to go by..
Yes, unlike injury, which affects only a specific area of the bod (limb, muscle, etc), an illness wreaks havoc on the entire bod! The immune system, digestive tract, and mental state, if you will, all go into their own state of catalysmic bonkus~!
So, why am I harping on about being sick? Everyone gets sick once a while, right? Beep! WRONG! Heck, I'm never ever gonna let myself get sick again (unless its being sick in the head, ah but that would need to be taken in an entirely different approach). Period.
Because, this once-in-a-lifetime stomach virus (or flu, as they call it)..cost me to
- throw up every single thing i try to eat/drink, including water, yes water. - run to the toilet every hour (to throw up and throw down? hehe. how to say cirit nicely, ah?) - lose 6 pounds over 2 days!!!!!!! grrr - sleep downstairs for fear of throwing up in my room - feel uncannily weak and light-headed - stay in while its nice weather for running outside - drag my giddy head out to walk the dog - be unable to eat rice or drink soymilk/milo, etc - refrain from eating for fear of throwing up - develop an intense hatred for the cursed virus that causes gastroenteritis - lose four training days
Now you know why even YOU should be aware and afraid. Unlike food poisoning, the stomach flu is contagious..repeat after me, contagious.......hoooo....
now, go wash your hands before you eat.
