  ISPCA and the Dreams
My anger has subsided. Yes, you're walking on calm waters now.

1. ISPCA

I started volunteering work at ISPCA today! Had a wonderful time giving the doggies baths and feeding them. Was there for only 2 hours today but am hoping to do 6 hours a few times a week starting tomorrow. Yay. Thanks to Mrs Doreen and Kak Atun who made me feel very welcomed on my first day. :)

For the clueless, ISPCA is the Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. They are a non-profit organization that provide care and shelter for unwanted animals until they are adopted. Right now, they have over 150 dogs and cats in their location 'in the hills' just outside of Ipoh. If you are interested, here is their website: http://www.aramisdesign.com/ispca/contact.shtml

And if you are SERIOUSLY interested in getting there, follow my directions here instead of the one on the website. Their sign on the main road has been taken down by some authorities.

-Pass by Hillcity Hotel on Jalan Gopeng. It will be on your right.
-After the second traffic light, turn left into the WIDE LORRY ROAD (dirt path)
-Watch out for a lot of 'invisible' and high bumps (meant for lorries) on the dirt path.
-Go all the way in, make a left (its the only turn)
-Make another left when you reach a T-junction. Just ahead of you, hidden by some branches and weeds, is the handmade ISPCA sign (black in color).
-Go all the way in and you'll pass by a fish pond on your left.
-At the foothills of the mountain, you'll reach the ISPCA!

2. DREAMS

As some of you may already know, Xing has been having dreamful nights of late. Yesterday and today's one was really...em..interesting

Sunday night: In the dream, I went out to an adventure at sea. Got rescued by some 'hero' dude. Then when i got back to land, i left 'hero' dude for my 'fiancee' - a total stranger! I had no idea how he became my fiancee but there was an announcement of me and him getting married. And then i dream i was at his business shop (goldsmith) and he pierced my ear. Darn sakit lei.. Felt the stinging pain on my ear lobe in the dream.

Monday night: In this one, I had given birth to a baby that looked exactly like my own youngest sister! What the heck. Then i dreamed that my mum was the one who took care of the baby properly while i went out with my friends. I dreamed that i visited Valerie in her mansion that had 3 sleeping anacondas. One red, one black and white, and one brown. After that i dreamed that i met my first ex's parents. Then i remember driving on the wrong side of the highway road. Much of that dream also had me driving a lot.

Silly, ain't it?

"Kita ada aduan untuk tembak anjing. Engkau boleh repot kepada sesiapa, saya tak peduli."

-- D*mn YOU B*st**D's! I don't care if you're a Bumi and Muslim! YOu have NO RIGHT whatsoever to take a life of an innocent animal belonging to somebody else! Does the Qu'ran teach You FREAKS to kill what doesn't belong to you?!--

No need for trigger-happy enforcement

I AM a directly affected party in the recent shooting of a young dog in tmy compound.
I live in the Veterinary Research Institute's institutional bungalow with a perimeter fence and a reasonably large compound. Naturally I free my dogs outside to answer the calls of nature.

Apparently the office had called the Ipoh City Hall enforcement unit to help in the control of strays terrorising the sheep and goats in the designated places at the back of the institute. The strays will definitely not be near the residences, and they come out only at night.

It is commendable that the enforcement unit responded immediately. A team consisting of six arrived at 8.30am on Feb 1.

However, instead of asking the complainant for the place of the strays, the enforcement team falsely concluded that any dog in the compound of the institute was a stray. Little did they realise that the dogs could be pets.

They shot my pedigree German Shepherd/Golden Retriever (10 days short of her seventh month) named Lucie twice, once in the throat and once in the abdomen.

Hearing the shots and its yelping, my wife and daughter rushed out and Lucie collapsed in my wife's arms.

On being informed I rushed back to the house. I was in a state of shock. When I asked what happened, the head of the unit loudly, defiantly and arrogantly shouted at me, "Kita ada aduan untuk tembak anjing. Engkau boleh repot kepada sesiapa, saya tak peduli."

I rushed Lucie to the veterinary clinic. In spite of the two shots Lucie did not die immediately. She suffered, gasping for breath and died 45 minutes later.

I would like to highlight another incident in Ipoh a couple of years ago. Two strays in the canteen of a leading school were caught by the enforcement unit, brought to the field and shot in front of hundreds of students and teachers. The students and teachers just stared in disbelief and shock. Just visualise the trauma in young minds.

It is heartening to note that the Datuk Bandar of Ipoh has taken a personal interest in the case. We are striving to be called a masyarakat penyayang (caring society). Incidents like these will relegate us to a trigger-happy community.

In formulating the Animal Ordinance I feel the two major veterinary institutions in Ipoh, viz., the Perak State Veterinary Services and the VRI should be consulted.

The rules and regulations stipulated in the current ordinance are all in favour of the enforcers. One states a dog with a licence but without the owner can be shot dead.

In such cases would it not be rational to catch the dog and place it in a pound for, say, about four days? The owner would come looking for his/her animal at which time he/she could be fined and asked to pay for the upkeep of the dog in the pound.

After this period the animal can be put to sleep in a humane manner, i.e., by lethal injection. If proprietary euthanasia drugs are expensive, a saturated solution of magnesium sulphate can be used. The cost of this chemical is a fraction of guns and bullets.

There are trained veterinary officers whol will be willing to put dogs to sleep in a humane manner. It is proposed that shooting be used only in the control of ferocious and uncontrollable dogs.

The shooter should be trained. One shot should be enough. The animals should not suffer and die. Lucie's tragic death should not be wasted.

Oh my God, oh my God, oh my GOD!
This REALLY happened in the case of my friend (ex-classmate) Srividhya!!! Yes, this is exactly what happenned to her dog - as recounted by Pei Ling to me. The author must have been her dad or brother.

Council dog shooters insensitive to public feelings
I WOULD like to recount the recent shooting of my young dog at the Veterinary Research Institute's compound. The council's public relations officer, Normala Latiff, had commented elsewhere that its staff had shot a dog which was "roaming" around and that it was shot by experts.

The city council dog unit people were called to shoot stray dogs at the back of the institute. But instead they saw my pedigree dog and assumed it was a stray and shot it twice, at my gate and again inside my compound.

Despite being shot twice by the so called "experts" my dog died after more than 35 minutes of suffering. Yes, it didn't have a collar at that time. Why didn't the enforcers ask at my house about the dog and find me, if necessary?

Everything would have been concluded amicably. But instead they took the law into their own hands and did what they thought was in the best interest of the council.

Never mind, my dog is dead. But the statement made by the PRO (NST, Feb 17) shows that the City Council does not have any feelings and are not sensitive to the opinions of the public.

Effectively, the statement reads as "we have the rules and we have the guns and this is the only method of control that we know, and so we'll continue shooting".

As civilized human beings all we are asking is to review the present set of rules and abolish shooting under normal circumstances and bring about changes after consultation with the relevant authorities - in this case the Veterinary Services Department.

Is that so difficult a task? Ipoh City Council, please be sensitive to the feelings of the public.

Another article about the cruelty toward dogs in Malaysia
SIMPANG RENGGAM, Feb 21:The family whose pet dog was dragged out of their home to be shot and bludgeoned to death last Thursday will be suing the Simpang Rengam District Council. Roland Ngoi said his family had engaged lawyer Gobind Singh Deo.

Ngoi is alleging that council enforcement officers dragged their dog, "Siau Mau", out of the house in Kampung Baru Layang Layang before shooting it in front of family members. He said what's worse was when the pet did not immediately die, the officers bludgeoned it, despite the pleas of his elderly mother and teenaged daughter.

Gobind, who is also Johor DAP deputy chairman, said it was a criminal offence for anyone to kill or maim animals under Sections 428 and 429 of the Malaysian Penal Code."Those found guilty under these sections can be jailed for between two and five years and fined," he said.

Meanwhile, pet lovers and members of the community today called the New Straits Times to express their outrage at the way the pet had been killed.

Ban dogs?!! Shoot them in own owner's compound?! MADNESS!!!
Darn it I am so PISSED off at stupid people who impose stupid rules on innocent dog owners! I CURSE every single MAN/WOMAN who has SHOT a domestic dog in the owner's own compounds. I CURSE the G*DDAMN Person who has shot a helpless dog minding its own business in the confines of its home. What in the name of Islam *yes, unfortunately* are they trying to do?!:!?!?!! Kill off every single dog in the entire of Malaysia?!?! FOOLS!!! I tell you, it has already started in Shah Alam and JB and there's no knowing to where this insanity will spread to.

I knew about this just today when my mum was talking about such a ban on dogs in Shah Alam. Apparently this madness started around April/May 2005 - during my finals week at Davis. Hence i was not aware of this at all!

MBSA Kenakan Syarat Lebih Ketat, Larang Pelihara Anjing Rottweiler

WHAT the heck?! And invite those DOG KILLERS into our houses and let them kill our dogs??! I've heard of several cases where these MAD crazy people just barge into the house compounds and shoot those poor (bless their souls) dogs.

NO WONDER i felt SO at home and happy in the US, where dog owners can take their dogs to the park and even go running with them. Dogs have such a happy home in US - where there are people who CARE and LOVE them. Just tune in to Animal Planet and you'll see the wonderful souls who rescue mistreated dogs. And not just dogs, but other animals as well. If people overseas can treat both dogs and cats with equality, why can't Malaysia. WHY SO #%()#$@# PREJUDICE AGAINST DOGS when you can't deny cats also cause problems?!?!

Here are a few feedbacks from fellow Malaysians. Oh Mr. Alfean Abu Bakar - THANK YOU AND oh, You ARE sensible!!

Dogs singled out by local council

Alfean Abu Bakar, Petaling Jaya

I am a bumiputera and I have a bone to pick with our local council by-laws. It concerns my dog. Yes, I own a dog and - like any conscientious dog owner - I am not too happy that the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) requires pet owners to obtain neighbours' written consent before issuing dog licences. I understand that the MPSJ is merely following what the Johor Bahru City Council had already done a while back.

I try to understand the inherent rationale for this: that dogs are deemed by some Muslims as 'haram' animals, and thus branded, dirty to an extreme degree. Muslims are to stay clear of them in order to retain and preserve their spiritual cleanliness. Yet I have come to the view that dogs are not dirty animals.

Personally, I think it is yet another irrevocable step towards entrenching Malay-Muslim prejudices into our daily lives. Dogs - and the apparently second-class citizens who love them, I feel - are really being victimised in this country.

Don't believe me? Go take a walk in any park in PJ and you'll eventually come across the MPPJ by-laws posted on a signboard. Read it carefully and you'll discover that you can go to jail a year for walking your dog in the park!

Furthermore, in Putrajaya, that pinnacle of Malay civilisation, horses can trot through its parks but no other animals are allowed. Presumably, you can also walk your little pony in the many other public parks, like those in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur, where 'No dogs [are] allowed'.

Are dogs are such pariah animals that they should sully the pristine perfection of our parks? Don't horses poop on park pathways too? Are pet rabbits/hamsters/cats any better? Chew on this: My next door neighbours - an old Chinese couple - have seven cats, three of which are kittens. One of their adult cats is now also pregnant. When she gives birth, there could be 10 cats or more in their house.

Why is my written permission not required for them to obtain a dozen cat licences and tags? Hey, MPSJ and MPPJ, want to collect more funds? Issue licences to cat owners too! At the rate that cats breed, the council is sitting on a potential goldmine. But I digress.

My neighbours' animals are such a nuisance to the neighbourhood. They take a dump in my and other people's gardens (do I have to remind anyone how badly cat shit smells?) and rummage through the garbage bins. And I'm not the only one feeling frustrated, I've even seen one neighbour from down the road fling her slipper from off her foot at them out of sheer exasperation. (STUPID CATS!)

My own father, bless him, loves to tend his garden but his sensitive skin gets the rashes after each weekend of gardening due to the faeces of cats that strayed from the same next door neighbour's.

Yet, no legislation exists to control animals like these. And no such legislation will probably be considered. The question I want to know is why?

Why are dogs singled out? Are they not the first wild animals to be domesticated by humans? Are they not man's 'best friend'? Aren't specially trained trekking and sniffing dogs not used by the police in some of its public-safety programmes? Are dogs so inherently dangerous that we need protection from them?

LOL. Maybe that's why there are still so much unsolved cases of drug peddling in Malaysia. Malaysian Police have no sense to use these SMART DOGS who are doomed *haram* in Islam. Bah!

Rottweiler ban a savage
May 5, 05 1:33pm
(From an unknown author at http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/35871)

I cannot for the world of me comprehend how the Shah Alam Municipal Council (MPSA) could have the heart to come up with such an uncompromisingly harsh and severe ruling as to ban all Rottweiler breeds from the state starting from next year.

The authorities have also expressed that they would refuse granting dog licences to dog owners who are not able to procure written permissions from their neighbours from all sides to keep a dog in their homes. Furthermore, only those with bungalows and end lots with land are allowed to keep dogs whereas those in between who cannot afford space will be deprived of ever owning dogs.

The move by MPSA to try and arrest the problem of dog attacks appears to be just as savage as the former. Imagine the heartbreak and misery the council will be causing to thousands of its residents who include women, children and the elderly who would have to arbitrarily give up their canines because of some neighbours' personal fear and ignorance about dogs, will not give them permission to have such pets around. The Rottweiler who happens to act as therapy and service dog to the disabled and the infirm will now have to be confiscated because it has suddenly been deemed as a ‘dangerous’ and ‘vicious’ dog.

Think of all the homes and neighbourhoods in Shah Alam that previously used to deter burglars and petty thieves because of the presence of the Rottweiler. They will now probably see an increase in such crimes and other ills with the disappearance of the Rotties. I would like to call on the MPSA to rescind their plan to ban the Rottweiler breed with immediate effect and instead declare an all-out war on owners who fail to raise up their dogs properly, especially the larger breeds.

On a lighter note (almost forgot about this due to my outrage),

  RM, RM, RM!

Ipoh is the next best place to shop! Compared to KL and Penang, its less crowded, and hence, easy on the gas, mind, and money! haha. Prices are affordable and you still get good and sensible fashion. For you pro-kl'ers, i'm not trying to say anything. I'm just giving an opinion based on my observations. You must remember, that yours truly dislikes huge crowds and busy cities.

Aren't they gorgeous! Green and brown thai silk-ish material (not sure if it is though. But it looks good all the same!)from Comma at only 9 each.Above is a close up of one of the skirts. Pretty 'songket-ish' eh? Black one was from Jusco (my sis has an identical one, hee) and the folded one from BumCity. Both 39 each.

I'm getting girlier by the day!

My first three 'ladylike' blouses! Haha..you must be wondering - what took her so long eh?

Mixed Culture at Ipoh Parade has some interesting and unique designs, I must say. From left, 19, 39, and 29 rm each.

Lovely bag from a Thai Expo at Greentown last week. Only 15!!!

Scarfs from Midvalley (KL trip) at 25 each. Ahaha...Jangan jeles kat aku masa winter kat Davis yeh?

In case you're wondering, this is my 'decorate-for-fun' rack in my room. Will post up pictures of my room soon. Am still in need of good quality tape to finish putting up my wall deco.

Phew. Blogging is hard work when it comes to pictures. Figures why i seldom do it.

  shopping >> running today
Looks like an opportunity to shop with mum and sis won over running at pologround today. :P After all, mum around = presence of credit card = purchasing made easy! haha. Amazing how many old friends i saw at the "new face" of Parkson Grand at Ipoh Parade today.

Also managed (by some sick twist of fate) to bump into mr. 'first-ex'. Conclusion from the meeting: Some people never change.Tsk, tsk..

Also, Ipoh guys are super lembik! Either they are bean poles or they are just plain muscle-less and sickly looking!

Now, see! A fine specimen of what real men our age should look like. Now there, see those *strong seXAY arms*???

I was thumbing through the May 2005 Readers Digest and came across an interesting article (to me, that is) explaining why exercise is good - through the chemistry of inflammation and growth. I sort of knew why exercising is good but never really fully understood the whole thing as I am not an Exercise Biology major.

"Every time you work out and sweat, you stress your muscles, draining them of enery stores; you actually injure them a little bit. It's not enough to do long-term damage, but enough to stimulate repair and growth and to make the muscles a little stronger.

Enzymes and proteins (eek! my poster fell off my cupboard!!) from those muscles enter your bloodstream, where they start a powerful chain reaction of inflammation, or decay, then repair, and finally growth.

The proteins that control inflammation and growth are called cytokines, and they regulate crucial metabolic pathways in almost every tissue and cell in your body. All forms of aerobic exercise release these proteins in direct proportion to the duration and intensity of exercise.

In marathon runners (woohoo! yay!), for example, the levels of some cytokines rise as much as a hundredfold by the end of the race. Still, those cytokines for inflammation and decay are always circulating, quietly chipping away at your body night and day, if you are sedentary. They are not that powerful, but they are relentless.

Your arteries are the part of your body most exposed to the chemicals of inflammation and decay (because they carry the blood). They are bathed in this chemistry for decades on end, and in response, they may become inflammed.

Beyond diet, exercise can help heal those wonded blood vessels. It appears to change the biology from inflammation to repair. Every time you exercise, blood flows through your muscles, picking up the cytokines for growth and taking them to all corners of your body. Every joint, bone, organ, and even the far reaches of your brain get a dose of healthy, rejuvenating chemistry each time you sweat."

  how unfortunate
Caught the sniffles again - just when i thought i had fully recovered.Poo..

Hence,

Wed, July 20th : 5km, pologround (energy crisis!)

Might also be due to my forgetting to eat a proper lunch today.

Completed Chronicles of Narnia yesterday. The last book, The Last Battle, was simply superb! Its the best of them all! Its amazing how CS Lewis brings out Christian Truths so well in Narnia. Felt like glimpses of heaven in every description of Aslan's Country in the end.

Parts from the Chronicles i like the best:

The Horse and His Boy (Book 3)
"Dearest daughter," said Aslan, planting a lion's kiss on her twitching, velvet nose, "I knew you would not be long in coming to me. Joy shall be yours."

Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Book 5)
Three times Eustace tries to peel off the dragon skin on his own, only to find that beneath each layer is another of the same. Then the lion [Aslan] said . . . You will have to let me undress you. I was afraid of his claws, I can tell you, but I was pretty nearly desperate now. So I just lay flat on my back to let him do it. The very first tear he made was so deep that I thought it had gone right into my heart. And when he began pulling the skin off, it hurt worse than anything I've ever felt.

*Isn't faith always accompanied by pain?*

The Last Battle (Book 7)
"Child, all the service thou hast done to Tash, I account as service done to me . . . . Not because he and I are one, but because we are opposites, I take to me the service which thou hast done to him, for I and he are of such different kinds that no service which is vile can be done to me, and none which is not vile can be done to him . . . unless thy desire had been for me thou wouldst not have sought so long and so truly. For all find what they truly seek."

  KL trip!
My little trip to KL was a pleasant one. Would have been better if not for the horrible udara tercemar.

First day, Pei Ling and I spent time together around the Setapak area. Had a nice 'mamaking' time and also criticizing the 'Cina' type Chinese species. Wahahaha!

Shopped at Midvalley the next day. KL is good for one thing only - SHOPPING. Spent almost rm100 on two very lovely scarfs, a book i've been searching all over Ipoh for - The Time Traveler's Wife, and some other items

The next day, met up with Adila my Davis housemate, and we went shopping (again!) at 1 Utama. My prolonged stay in US must have unleashed the 'shopping monster' in me. Things are much much more affordable in Malaysia!

My last day was spent with Adila, Fei Yian (another Davis housemate), and Faizal (fellow Atu9'er, at 1 utama again. Had lunch at this Hakka style place and Gelato! Yum. And so, we parted at Pudu (thanks to Faizal for giving me a ride) and i reached Ipoh safe and sound - with a TERRIBLE cold and sore throat!

Pictures will be appearing later.

Can't help but mention this: I DIDn'T RUN FOR A WEEK!!! OH guilty conscience! Spare me!

  After 4 years,,
Today's outing with Kit Ann and Sook Kwin was one worth laughing about!

Kit Ann: Eiii guysss...today can teman me go get SPM cert ah? I haven't take yet.
Xing: Ha..? Not yet? Wahh...NOW only you wanna take? After 4 years!?!
Sook Kwin: Haiya this girl. When need to find job then only wanna get her SPM cert! Eh, Hsing Ling, you took yours already right?
Xing: Yup! (smug and confident) Its the small piece of paper right? White in color.
Kit Ann: Oiks!
Sook Kwin: HA....? No lah! It's a proper cert, with signature and all. You sure you took or not?
Xing: Hei?? Don't tell me I haven't collected mine yet??? Oh-uh....Haiyah..I'm sure I took it already...Very sure....

An hour later in the school office..

My 1119 and SPM cert are still there!! What the heck. 4 years! Ahaha..we were suppressing our giggles so hard when the office lady asked, "Tahun berapa?"..and us sheepishly answering "2001"...

Anyway, attempted a 10K in Polo Ground this evening. A 'failed' 10K - one with many stops and walking intervals. Could have finished in an hour if not for the sudden drizzle that dragged on. It tends to rain every evening now. Must be a 'sign' to Xing, "Jangan gatal nak lari banyak sangat!" Ho ho ho!

Off to KL tomorrow morning. Whee..Will get to hang out with Kit Ann & Pei Ling as well as my Davis friends, Adilla and Yoong. Seeya guys soon.

  There goes..
Achk! There goes my weekend of training. Heading to KL with a friend on Saturday. Oh well, I guess fun still beats work. At least there's still today's plan to do my own little 10K run. If not, then 7K. Been doing short runs and mostly speedwalks this week. Don't want my shinsplints to return just after the Ipoh Half Marathon on Sunday. Man, it was only 5 days ago but it feels like ETERNITY to me. Can't bear to live a day w/o running.

Came across many interesting running blogs. Man, these guys (sigh, all guys. Where are the women?!!) are funny and crappy. Ach looking forward to the day i can finally join a Running group. With a proper coach and proper place to train.

Got the form for Putrajaya Half Marathon yesterday. I know this sounds crazy, but should I go for the 21K or 10K?

Yeah, she's crazy. 21K. What could she possibly be thinking?

Alright, maybe 10K then. Most probably.

  Back on Track :P
Welp! Looks like training will start again today.

Lessons from IIR 10K:
1. Run with OWN comfortable T-shirt. Not some official T-shirt given for the run if it doesn't feel comfy. Same goes with the socks and shoes.
2. Line up closest to the front line at the start of OWN category. Especially when there are participants who don't understand the meaning of "Diminta HANYA kategori 'so-and-so' SAHAJA beratur di tali permulaan". You could lose a whole 5-10 minutes b/c of that.
3. Bananas and Gatorade are good. They're your best friends 2-3 hours prior to the run.
4. When given water during the run, remember to let some splash onto thighs. Helps cool them heated up muscles.
5. Have FUN. (ahh..the sheer joy of potonging 'egoistic' high school boys)

Future goals:
1. Do a 10K once a week.
2. Catch up on Yoga. (You bad, bad girl. Don't waste what you've learned from Annie!)
3. More hill work.
4. Sleep more.
5. Work towards US Half Marathon scheduled for November 2005.

And in the past two days:
1. Relaxed and tasted wonderful food.
Vegetarian Nasi Lemak. (interesting...)
Banana milk drink (delish!)
Lemang with kaya! (ehek..that was on saturday actually)
ROJAK PASEMBOR!
Soy Nuts that finally came to Jusco.

2. Sat back and enjoyed movies I never knew we had in the house.Talk about ignorance.
Puteri Gunung Ledang ( love it to bits )
House of Flying Daggers
Infernal Affairs II
The Polar Express

3. Read read and read
Stack of Scientific American magazines dating from Sept 2003
Another stack of Readers Digest
Girly mags (Seventeen, Radiance, OH! Health)

4. SLEEP SLEEP AND SLEEP!

Wonderful! SPlendid! Heeee..

Dataran Ipoh
Flag off time: 7.10am
10km. 65 minutes. Group E: Women's 10km. #29

Beeming with pride NOT because of my position, but because I ran a 10km WITHOUT stopping! Yay. Seriously, I had visions of myself stopping and walking part of the time, but NOPE. Ran all them km's from start to the end. Hahah. Even had the energy (I think my legs switched to "LET THE OWNER DO WHATEVER SHE WANTS TO US" mode) to pecut near the finishing line.

Wakaka...My first REAL 10km run.!! Glad it was done in Ipoh. :)
